Few trade secrets are as famous as the recipe for The Coca-Cola Company‘s flagship soft drink. For more than a century, the formula has been surrounded by mystery, becoming one of the most closely guarded corporate secrets in the world.

According to company history, whenever the written formula needed to be transferred between secure locations, it wasn’t transported in anything that would attract attention. Instead, it reportedly traveled in an ordinary, unmarked briefcase or secure container, avoiding labels or markings that might reveal its significance. The idea was simple: the less attention it drew, the safer it would be.

Over the years, countless legends emerged about the formula. One of the most famous claims is that only two executives know the complete recipe at any given time and that they are never allowed to travel together. While this story has become part of Coca-Cola’s mythology, the company has never confirmed it. In reality, multiple trusted employees are believed to have access to portions of the manufacturing process.

In 2011, Coca-Cola publicly moved the written recipe—known as “Merchandise 7X” in company lore—to a high-security vault at the World of Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta, where it remains stored as both a security measure and a tourist attraction. Visitors can see the vault itself, but the recipe inside remains inaccessible.

Unlike patents, which eventually expire and require public disclosure, trade secrets can remain protected indefinitely as long as they are kept confidential. By relying on secrecy rather than patent protection, Coca-Cola has preserved the mystery surrounding its formula for well over 130 years.

Today, the recipe’s mystique is almost as valuable as the beverage itself. Whether or not every legend is true, the secrecy surrounding Coca-Cola’s formula has become one of the greatest branding stories in business history
