British father Richard Scott spent more than a day and a half doing something that sounds like a childhood game taken to an almost absurd extreme.
He sat on a swing—and kept swinging.
From May 14 to May 15, 2022, Scott spent 36 hours and 32 minutes going back and forth on a swing in Kinross, Scotland, officially earning the Guinness World Records title for the longest marathon on a swing.
The challenge was considerably harder than it sounds. Scott later explained that his hip flexors became extremely sore after only about four hours, and the pain continued for much of the attempt. He was allowed scheduled rest periods under Guinness rules, which he saved up for longer breaks, including a 12-minute power nap during the night.
Scott had actually dreamed about attempting the record for nearly 40 years. The idea returned when he told his young son about his childhood fascination with swing records. He looked up the existing record, saw that it was 34 hours, and thought: “I could do that.”
But the record attempt produced an unexpected bonus.
While arranging the independent witnesses needed for the challenge, Scott met Alana Brown. They eventually went on a date and became a couple. As Scott himself put it, “We met on the swing.”
So Scott didn’t just walk away with a Guinness World Records certificate.
He apparently found love on the way to breaking a world record.
He spent 36 hours and 32 minutes on a swing, endured severe physical discomfort, broke a world record—and somehow got a girlfriend out of it too.
