During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Abbey D’Agostino and Nikki Hamblin collided during the women’s 5,000-meter preliminary race and both crashed to the track.

Rather than continuing the race, D’Agostino stopped to encourage Hamblin to get back on her feet, telling her, “Get up, we’ve got to finish this.” Moments later, D’Agostino—who had suffered a serious knee injury in the fall—collapsed again. Hamblin then stayed with her before both athletes continued the race.

Neither runner advanced to the final based on their finishing times. However, after officials reviewed the incident, both were advanced to the final because they had been impeded by the collision. D’Agostino was ultimately unable to compete in the final due to her injury, while Hamblin did compete.

Their remarkable display of sportsmanship drew worldwide praise and became one of the defining moments of the Rio Olympics.
