On July 14, 2026, a bizarre rescue unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, when a man became trapped inside the waste-holding tank of a portable toilet while trying to retrieve a bottle of Mountain Dew.
The incident happened after an event connected with the FIFA World Cup, according to Patriot Portable Restrooms, the company servicing the portable toilets. The man reportedly told rescuers that he had dropped his Mountain Dew bottle into the toilet the previous night and climbed inside the unit’s waste tank to retrieve it.
The situation was discovered when workers returned to collect the portable toilets. One unit was locked, and the occupant wouldn’t come out. A passing Kansas City police officer was called to investigate, but when responders looked inside, they initially couldn’t see anyone.
Then, according to the company representative, a man’s head suddenly appeared through the toilet bowl.
Firefighters were called to the scene and eventually had to cut apart the portable toilet to free him. After roughly eight hours inside the waste tank, the unidentified man was finally rescued and washed down with water from a fire truck. Authorities did not publicly identify him or report any serious injuries.
The strangest part of the story is the reason he entered in the first place. According to the company’s account, he went into the tank because he wanted his Mountain Dew back.
