Most people spend a lifetime mastering a single profession. Jonny Kim built three extraordinary careers before the age of 40. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy, Kim served as a Navy SEAL, deploying on combat missions in Iraq and earning some of the military’s highest honors, including the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Combat “V.” His service placed him among the most elite special operations forces in the world.

When his military career ended, Kim pursued an entirely different path. He earned a degree in mathematics before graduating from Harvard Medical School, where he trained as a physician. He later completed his residency in emergency medicine, applying the same discipline and composure that had defined his years in special operations to caring for critically ill and injured patients.

As if excelling in two demanding careers wasn’t enough, Kim reached another milestone in 2017, when NASA selected him from more than 18,000 applicants to join its astronaut class—one of the most competitive selections in the agency’s history. After years of intensive astronaut training, he went on to become eligible for spaceflight assignments and later flew to the International Space Station, making him one of the very few people to have served as a Navy SEAL, physician, and astronaut.
