For years, members of the 9GAG community ended lengthy posts with the phrase, “Sorry for the long post, here’s a Potato.” What started as an inside joke eventually evolved into Potatoz—a cheerful pixel-art mascot that became one of the platform’s most recognizable original characters. After expanding the character into merchandise, collectibles, and real-world community events, 9GAG has now taken the next step by launching its first original video game, Potatoz Survivors.
Unlike a traditional game release that can take years to develop, Potatoz Survivors was reportedly built in just 60 days using AI-assisted development tools under the leadership of 9GAG Chief Product Officer Kevin Yuen. The free browser-based game places players in a fast-paced survival arena where the Potatoz character battles waves of enemies by firing heart-shaped projectiles while collecting upgrades and surviving increasingly chaotic attacks. Because it runs directly in a web browser, players can jump into the game instantly without downloading or installing anything.
The project also highlights how AI is changing game development. Rather than replacing human creativity, AI tools helped accelerate programming, asset creation, and iteration, allowing a small team to move from concept to launch in only two months. For internet-native companies like 9GAG, this opens the door to transforming popular memes and community-created characters into fully interactive experiences much faster than traditional development cycles would allow.
According to 9GAG, Potatoz Survivors is not intended to be a one-time promotional project. Instead, it marks the beginning of a broader effort to expand the Potatoz brand beyond memes and merchandise into gaming and interactive entertainment.
