In January 2022, the fossilized remains of a massive ichthyosaur were discovered in Rutland Water Nature Reserve in England. This ichthyosaur, nicknamed the “Rutland Sea Dragon,” is about 10 meters (33 feet) long and is estimated to be around 180 million years old. It is the largest and most complete ichthyosaur fossil ever found in the UK.
Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles that resembled modern dolphins and whales, living during the Mesozoic Era between 250 and 90 million years ago. This particular discovery is significant due to its size, completeness, and excellent preservation.
