Before becoming one of the most powerful figures in professional sports, John Henry made his fortune through investment management, developing a reputation for using quantitative strategies to analyze financial markets.

His transformation into a sports mogul began in 2002, when Henry joined a group that purchased the Boston Red Sox for approximately $700 million. At the time, the franchise carried one of baseball’s most famous curses: Boston had not won the World Series since 1918.

Just two years later, everything changed.

In 2004, the Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first World Series championship in 86 years, creating one of the most celebrated moments in American sports history.

But Henry wasn’t finished.

Through Fenway Sports Group (FSG), his sports interests expanded internationally. FSG acquired Liverpool FC in 2010, later purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins, and expanded into sports media, entertainment, and other investments.

The remarkable part is the scale of the transformation. Henry’s original baseball investment eventually became the foundation of a multibillion-dollar international sports organization spanning baseball, football, hockey, media, and entertainment.
