Tsutomu Yamaguchi is widely recognized as one of the only people officially acknowledged to have survived both atomic bombings during World War II.

In August 1945, Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip when the first atomic bomb detonated. The explosion left him injured with burns and temporary hearing damage, yet despite the devastation, he reportedly managed to return home to Nagasaki days later.

Tragically, Nagasaki then became the target of the second atomic bombing on August 9, 1945. Astonishingly, Yamaguchi survived that explosion as well.

His story later became internationally known because the odds of living through both attacks seemed almost impossible. In later years, the Japanese government officially recognized him as a survivor of both bombings, turning his experience into one of the most extraordinary survival stories connected to the war.

Afterward, Yamaguchi spent much of his life speaking publicly about nuclear weapons, war, and peace, hoping future generations would never experience similar destruction again.

For many people, his life became more than a survival story.

It became a reminder of the unimaginable human impact behind history’s deadliest weapons.
