A 24-year-old man from Missouri is reportedly facing up to 98 years in prison after investigators accused him of running a scam involving vehicle sales through Facebook Marketplace.
According to police, the suspect allegedly sold cars using fake titles and fraudulent paperwork before later stealing the vehicles back shortly after the transactions were completed. Authorities believe at least eight buyers were targeted in the scheme, with victims collectively losing around $24,000.
The case quickly gained attention online because of how common Facebook Marketplace has become for buying used vehicles, electronics, and other expensive items. Many people were shocked by the alleged strategy itself — reportedly selling the same vehicles while still maintaining control over them afterward.
Investigators say the suspect is now facing 14 felony charges, and if convicted on all counts, he could potentially spend decades behind bars.
The story has also become another warning about the risks of online marketplace transactions, especially involving high-value purchases where fake paperwork and rushed deals can sometimes fool buyers.
