China has officially launched its first domestically developed deep-sea exploration vessel, Tansuo-3, in Sanya City, Hainan. The ship is set to begin its research missions in 2025.
Designed by the Sanya Institute and other leading organizations, Tansuo-3 promises to advance China’s manned submersible capabilities. The vessel boasts impressive specs, including a top speed of 16 knots, a range of 15,000 nautical miles, and the ability to accommodate around 80 crew members.
Built in 2023, the ship completed an eight-day sea trial in October and is now ready for service under the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering.
