Perry, the miniature donkey believed to have inspired the character Donkey in the Shrek films, has died at the age of 30 after battling laminitis, a hoof disease.

Born in 1994, Perry spent most of his life in Barron Park, Palo Alto, California, where he became a cherished community member.

The park shared its grief on Instagram, describing Perry as a beloved figure whose passing has deeply touched many. Plans for a memorial are set to be announced.

Perry’s connection to the Shrek franchise added to his fame. According to reports, he posed for photos and sketches to help model Eddie Murphy’s comedic and lovable character in the animated series, earning a modest fee of around £60 for the role.

The first Shrek film debuted in 2001, winning an Oscar and capturing hearts worldwide with Donkey’s humor and charm. Perry’s passing marks the end of an era for both his local community and fans of the iconic franchise.
