At Mecum’s Kissimmee 2026 auction in Florida, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO “Bianco Speciale”, chassis 3729GT, sold for $38.5 million including the buyer’s premium. The sale became the most expensive car ever sold by Mecum and, at the time, the highest-priced car sold at public auction in 2026.

What makes this particular Ferrari extraordinary is its white paint.

Only 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs were produced between 1962 and 1964, and chassis 3729GT is the only one finished in Bianco white by Ferrari itself. It was originally purchased by British racing-team owner John Coombs and went on to compete extensively during the 1960s.

Its racing history reads almost like a who’s-who of motorsport. The car was driven by legendary racers including Graham Hill, Jack Sears, Mike Parkes, Roy Salvadori and Richie Ginther. It even finished second overall at the RAC Tourist Trophy at Goodwood in both 1962 and 1963.

And here’s the fascinating part: the Ferrari has never been fully restored.

Mecum described it as maintained, repaired and refinished rather than completely restored, allowing it to retain numerous details from its racing years. That originality—and its competition history—was a major part of its appeal to collectors. The $38.5 million price is enormous, but it isn’t the highest price ever paid for a 250 GTO. Another example sold privately for far more, while a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sold at auction for around $48.4 million in 2018.
