Paul Karason became one of the internet’s most recognizable medical cases after developing permanently blue skin from years of using colloidal silver as a home remedy.
Originally fair-skinned, Karason developed a condition called Argyria in the early 1990s, caused by silver particles building up in the body over time. His appearance shocked millions when he appeared on national television in 2008, explaining that he believed colloidal silver had helped treat his acid reflux and arthritis — despite it also causing the dramatic change to his skin.
As photos and interviews spread online, Karason became a viral figure worldwide, with many people comparing him to fictional blue characters. But behind the internet attention was a far more difficult personal story.

In later years, he reportedly struggled with serious health issues including heart problems and prostate cancer, along with periods of homelessness and financial hardship. Despite warnings from medical experts, he continued using colloidal silver until the end of his life.
Karason passed away in 2013 at age 62 after suffering a heart attack that reportedly led to pneumonia and a stroke.
What made his story so unforgettable wasn’t just his appearance.
It was how far someone was willing to go believing they had found their own cure.
