In 1988, Aloha Airlines Flight 243 experienced one of the most terrifying emergencies in aviation history after a large section of the aircraft’s roof suddenly tore away mid-flight.
Passengers aboard the Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 were abruptly exposed to open sky thousands of feet above the Pacific Ocean as powerful winds ripped through the cabin. The damage was so severe that parts of the aircraft were completely missing while the plane was still in the air.
Despite the chaos, pilot Robert Schornstheimer and the flight crew managed to maintain control of the aircraft and safely land it in Hawaii, saving the lives of many onboard. Aviation experts later praised the crew’s calm response under nearly unimaginable conditions.

The incident became one of the most studied aviation emergencies ever because it highlighted both the dangers of structural fatigue and the importance of emergency training in commercial aviation.
To many people, the most unbelievable part remains the same:
A plane missing part of its roof still made it back to the ground safely.
