Japan’s Eshima Ohashi Bridge is famous because certain camera angles make it appear dramatically steeper than it really is. However, it is not known for producing musical sounds.

A different phenomenon occurs on some long-span bridges, including Golden Ears Bridge and more recently the Golden Gate Bridge after modifications to its railings. Under the right wind conditions, air flowing around bridge cables, railings, or other structural components can generate humming, whistling, or even musical tones through a process known as Aeolian vibration.

These sounds are generally not intentionally designed as musical features. Instead, they result from the interaction between wind and the bridge’s geometry. Engineers study these vibrations because they can reveal how air moves around the structure and, in some cases, indicate whether design adjustments are needed to reduce noise or unwanted oscillations.

The phenomenon has fascinated both drivers and engineers, showing how large structures can unexpectedly produce sounds that resemble giant musical instruments when nature provides the right conditions.
