Troy Hurtubise became famous for dedicating years of his life to building a suit capable of surviving a grizzly bear attack after a terrifying encounter with one in 1984.

The Canadian inventor developed a series of armored prototypes known as the “Ursus” suit, turning what began as fear into a full-scale obsession. Hurtubise constantly tested the armor in extreme ways, reportedly allowing himself to be hit with baseball bats, slammed by moving trucks, crashed into trees, and even struck by heavy falling logs to see how much impact the suit could absorb.

The bizarre experiments quickly made him an internet-famous figure long before viral content became common online. Many people were stunned by how far he was willing to go personally testing the equipment instead of using crash dummies or lab simulations.

His unusual mission later became the focus of the 1996 documentary Project Grizzly, which turned Hurtubise into a cult figure known for combining determination, fearlessness, and pure eccentricity.

What fascinated people most wasn’t just the bear suit itself.

It was the fact that someone became so obsessed with surviving one animal encounter that they spent years building real-life armor like something out of science fiction.
