Sparrow was once one of the most loved email apps on Mac and iPhone — fast, minimal, and far ahead of its time.

In 2012, Google acquired Sparrow, not to grow it, but to bring its team into Gmail.

After the deal, development stopped. No major updates. No new features. Eventually, the app disappeared entirely.

But Sparrow didn’t really die — its ideas lived on inside Gmail and later products like Inbox.

It became a classic example of “acqui-hiring,” where big tech buys innovation… and absorbs it instead of scaling it.
